WITHOUT THE USE OF VIDEOCONFERENCING, THIS PROJECT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE..

JØRN SKAANE, CEO LEFDAL MINE DATACENTER

Background

Lefdal Mine Datacenter (LMD) is built into a mountain, and is situated within 100 meters of a deep fjord. This gives the facility access to free seawater cooling systems and CO2-neutral energy sources from a variety of local hydroelectric generators. This unique location, green power, the low cost of energy and cooling, stabile infrastructure and political environment made it possible to create the biggest datacenter facility in Europe. LMD’s vision is: “To build and run the most cost effective, secure, flexible and green datacenter solution in Europe.”

Challenge

The planning and execution of a high-tech project like this, typically needs the involvement of very high skilled specialists from around the globe and with very busy schedules. A team of 40 professionals out of the ICT industry, engineering and governmental agencies made this happen. It became quickly clear that people constantly travelling be problematic, and that web conferencing tools would not be sufficient to have stable, long and sophisticated meetings.

“For us, this remote location is everything: the water from the fjord for cooling, the mountains for vast security. Videoconferencing has taken down the barrier we would have had to succeed in this global project.”

Deployment

LMD decided to work with Videonor to setup a trustworthy video conferencing framework with equipped meeting rooms, desktop systems and web based video clients to swiftly communicate between all parties. All video capabilities are hosted on the Videonor platform which ensures the much needed reliability and ease of use for the success of this project.

Results

For Jorn Skaane, CEO, Lefdal Mine, the usage of videoconferencing with Videonor is key to the success of the datacenter project: “Without the use of videoconferencing, this project would not have been possible.”

Videoconferencing was not only key for the setup of Lefdal Mine but also plays a huge role in the current communication streamline between all members of the team. “Basically, everyone has video everywhere and on every device. It has become our standard means of communications.”
